Short answer: ISO 19650 is an international series of standards for managing information over the life of a built asset using BIM. It defines roles, information requirements, delivery plans and a common data environment. An external BIM partner works within those rules as part of the delivery team.
General overview only. It is not certification, legal or contractual advice. Always follow your project’s documents.
The parts of the series
- Part 1: concepts and principles.
- Part 2: information management during the delivery phase.
- Part 3: the operational phase of assets.
- Part 4: information exchange.
- Part 5: a security-minded approach to information management.
- Part 6: health and safety information.
Key roles
- Appointing party: receives information, usually the client.
- Lead appointed party: manages information delivery for a delivery team.
- Appointed party: produces information within the delivery team. An external BIM partner typically works for or within an appointed party.
Key documents
- EIR (exchange information requirements): what information the appointing party needs.
- BEP (BIM execution plan): how the delivery team will meet those requirements.
- MIDP and TIDP: master and task information delivery plans listing what is delivered, by whom and when.
The common data environment
Information containers move through four states: work in progress, shared, published and archived. Checks and approvals happen at each transition. Many UK projects use suitability codes (for example S1 for coordination) and revision codes defined in the UK National Annex. See our interactive CDE example.
What to give your BIM partner
- The EIR or relevant extracts, the BEP and the TIDP tasks assigned to them.
- Naming, status and revision rules, and templates.
- CDE access or an agreed transfer method.
- Review points and who approves information for sharing.
